Couples Retreat (Blu-Ray) is Raunchy and Romantic

Damien Novy

Just in time for spring comes the Blu-ray release of “Couples Retreat.” Starring Vince Vaughn, John Favreau, Jason Bateman and Kristin Bell, “Couples Retreat” is a decent film; a combination of romantic and raunchy comedies. The movie follows four couples as they escape their lives and head to a couples resort called Eden. Upon arrival, they find the 'optional' relationship building activities aren't quite as optional as they thought. While their struggles with the therapists and an over-zealous director (played by Jean Reno) certainly have a distinct comedic quality, I also found there to be some insight in the way director Peter Billingsley (forever famous as young Ralphie in the yuletide classic, “A Christmas Story”) handled the portrayals of each couple. It was all too easy to relate to the couple who felt stuck in a rut and another that had lost the passion in their marriage.

This movie, as awkward and ridiculous as it got, still somehow managed to sneak in some heartfelt moments that didn't seem too sappy. Any fans of Vince Vaughn will not be disappointed, and in fact may be pleasantly surprised.

The High Definition picture was top-notch. The crystal clear picture truly made the resort look like paradise. As far as the special features included, they are average overall. The usual outtakes reel and director commentary is present, and there are some extended scenes that show how well the cast could improvise. But other than these, not much bonus material is noteworthy.

Overall, I thought “Couples Retreat” was a very decent movie. I can certainly see this being a movie somebody would watch more than once and want to buy. If you looking for an adult comedy with a little more, I would recommend this movie, but if you’re not into the 'sharing your feelings' type of movie, you may want to rent it first.
