Is 'Where the Wild Things Are' appropriate for kids?

Jacquelyn Jacobson, Massage Technician

“Where the Wild Things Are” is about a boy who causes trouble at home and runs away to an imaginary place filled full of Wild Things. These Wild Things are big creatures that displayed many issues that plague adults. The boy declares himself a king and tries to cheer up the Wild Things.

I think that the beginning of the film was kind of slow and didn’t give a lot of backstory on many relationships. You don’t really know much about the mother or the fact that she has a boyfriend, and I think that it is an odd roll for Mark Ruffalo because he is barely seen in the movie. I also felt like there should have been more description about the boy’s relationship with his sister. I kind of didn’t like the fact that the boy actually leaves his home instead of, as in the book, when he is just dreaming. But I do have to say that I was actually entertained by this movie. If you’re just planning on watching it for the entertainment value, it certainly has that. And another plus to the movie is the fact that it has a very good soundtrack.

I feel that this movie is not appropriate for kids. The rating for this movie is PG, but I feel like it should be PG-13. There were a lot of things said in the movie that I did not think would be appropriate for children to hear, such as the brains being cut out of peoples heads that they didn’t like, nor did I like how the Wild Things threaten to resolve their problems by eating things such as little kids.
